Day #11

Another Day…More fun and programming. :D

I spent the morning reading another chapter in Learning SQL. Part of me says I should have spent the time being a bit more productive but I also need to learn more about SQL so I can do my job more effectively.

Anyway, about the time I finished reading chapter 4 my supervisor (Jerome) showed up and got me started working on some fixes for the stuff I worked on during my first week with MCG. That was followed quickly by a few requests for fixes to the stuff I worked on last week concerning the various new pages and things.

The sites from last week took priority and so I knocked out a slew of them over the course of the afternoon. I spent the last hour of the day discussing SQL with the co-founder (Patrick) and just getting a run down from him over some of the uses for various SQL commands/queries at MCG. This included some best practices and a few other things I havent come across yet either at work or on my own with the database I run on my webserver at home (MySQL).

Day #10

Heh…this time I blame it on the in-laws. ;) Anywho this wound up being a long day. I knew it could be when I left in the morning. We wanted to release the changes and additions to the site I was working on at the end of the day and I had quite a plate full for the day.

The short version is that I got everything done and used the last minute to do so. Unfortunately I had one teeny tiny little “problem” that I couldnt get sorted out so Jerome took a look at it and was able to get that “problem” sorted out pretty quickly but then proceeded to make a handful of additional changes resulting in us being there until about 6:45 which was still not too bad all things considered. I at least, was very pleased with how I did and with getting it done right to the minute minus the one quick fix.

So what did I actually do? Completed one page (there was about 25% left to do from Day 9), Created and completed a second page that was a pop-up from the first page, implemented all the code for the backend of the 2 new pages and then integrated all of it into the pre-existing site so it would all flow and function seamlessly with what was there and what was new!

It was a full but satisfying day. Still can’t believe I’ve been there 2 weeks now…feels like about 2 days. That’s okay though, The day’s are absolutely flying by and I’m very much enjoying what I’m working on without feeling terribly overwhelmed most of the time. THIS is what I went to school for and I’m very much enjoying what I do! It’s just COOL to be creating these pages and things and having it all work.

I enjoy it primarily because you take a HUGE problem like creating a website and break it down into these little pieces. Focus on getting something like that bar of links on the left side of THIS page working and once you get that move on to the middle or top or something. Before you know it the whole site is completed and I did it myself, usually thinking at the outset that there is just no way…I can’t even SEE where I’m going with the project let alone where I’m going to start.
